Clarence Clemons, In Memoriam: The Big Man, In More Ways Than One

The iconic sax man for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band (and Lady Gaga) towered over contemporary music for nearly five decades.

Clarence Clemons was affectionately known as "The Big Man," probably because, well, he was a big man. Standing six-feet, four-inches tall -- and nearly just as wide -- he towered over Bruce Springsteen, the E Street Band, and whomever else he shared the stage with during his five-decade career, casting a shadow as formidable as it was striking (it's no wonder Bruce decided to lean on him, like some sort of lamppost, on the cover of 1975's Born To Run).

But his physical size only told part of the story. Because Clemons was also a massive talent, a saxophonist as adept at filing an arena with his booming solos as he was providing a rock-solid backbone to Springsteen's churning, yearning rock. He was the Big Man because everything ran through him, because he was capable of both taking the lead (like on "Jungleland") and laying back in the cut (like on "10th Avenue Freeze Out," where his presence definitely shapes the song, but at no point overshadows its other components), and because of the tones he charmed from his sax ... crisp and clear-eyed, grandiose yet gritty, big yet decidedly blue-collar (just like he was), no one played like Clarence did. And when he died on Saturday at the age of 69 after complications from a stroke he suffered last week, not only did we lose a mountain of a man, but an icon as well.

See photos of Clemons throughout his career.

Simply put, Clemons was the most prominent sax player in popular music. And as proof, I'll ask you to name any of his contemporaries. Chances are, you can't; not because they don't exist, but because they couldn't begin to approach his stature. He was the go-to guy when the stars needed a session hand (recording with the likes of Aretha Franklin and Twisted Sister, and performing live with everyone from the Grateful Dead to Ringo Starr,) and, more recently, Lady Gaga tapped him to perform on her Born This Way album -- he appears in her new "The Edge Of Glory" video, a move that no doubt introduced his sublime playing to a whole new generation of fans. Shoot, he even appeared on "The Simpsons," "The Wire" and "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure," where he played, fittingly enough, one of the Three Most Important People in the World.

Remember Clemons with us on Facebook.

In passing, he leaves behind a catalog that's nearly as massive as his frame: not only his notable guest appearances, but several solo albums (and records he cut with backing bands like the Temple of Soul and the Red Bank Rockers) and, of course, the myriad of albums he cut with Springsteen and the E Street Band. And it's on those recordings -- starting with 1973's Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J. and continuing right on through 2009's Working on a Dream and last year's reissue The Promise -- where Clemons not only shone the brightest, but also showcased the reason why he earned his "Big Man" nickname. Sure, he burns on songs like "Badlands" and "Born To Run," but listen to his work on songs like "Prove It All Night" and "Dancing in the Dark" (to name six dozen) ... the times where he proves to be the Bigger Man, letting his fellow bandmates get their share, too.

Rarely has there been a player so soulful and selfless ... one so secure in his own status that he was willing to let others shine. It's why Clarence Clemons will forever be known as "The Big Man," and why, even in death, he still casts a formidable shadow over popular music and popular culture. He was the sax man's sax man. To paraphrase Springsteen on "Freeze Out," not only was the change was made uptown when the Big Man joined the band, but the mould was broken, too.

Bristol Palin on 'GMA': My Virginity Was "Stolen"

Bristol Palin on 'GMA': My Virginity Was "Stolen"

Now that her memoir, Not Afraid of Life: My Journey So Far, has hit shelves, Bristol Palin is finally airing her true feelings about ex-boyfriend Levi Johnston. In an interview with Good Morning America on Monday, Palin addressed her shocking revelation that Johnston took her virginity while she was drunk for the first time, leaving her with no recollection of the event. In the words of her book, Bristol, 20, says she felt like her virginity was "stolen."

"I'm not accusing Levi of date rape, or rape at all, but I am just looking back with the adult eyes that I have now and just thinking that was a foolish decision." Palin told GMA's Robin Roberts. "I should have never been underage drinking and I should have never gotten myself into a situation like that."

Whether or not Palin put herself in a bad situation, we're pretty sure that if Johnston did indeed have sex with Bristol while she was drunk and unable to give her consent, that is the very definition of date rape. But, hey, we weren't there (thankfully), so we don't know what went down. Moving right along...

Determined to make things work with Johnston, Palin became engaged to him after she got pregnant with baby Tripp, now 2, then re-engaged a year after their first tumultuous breakup. Unfortunately, says Bristol, she found out that Levi had cheated on her the day the engagement hit the cover of Us Weekly.

"The magazine was released on a Wednesday nationwide, and on that Wednesday, Levi comes home and tells me that another girl might have his baby," Bristol relates. "That was definitely a punch to the stomach."

Even worse: she had isolated her entire family, and she couldn't clear things up with the press for two weeks because of an exclusivity clause with the magazine. "I had betrayed everyone who was important to me," she says of the short-lived engagement.

These days, Johnston isn't around so much -- by his own choice, says Bristol. And she doesn't have any reservations about bad-mouthing him (she calls him a "gnat" who is "constantly spreading false accusations against our family") because she doesn't think he'll be a major presence in Tripp's life.

"I don't know if Levi will be a big role model or in his life at all," she admits. "I'm not worried about it."

She's also not worried about her critics -- whether they're going after her for advocating teenage abstinence ("I hate the word abstinence," she admits) or making insinuations about her recent jaw surgery.

"It's like getting braces on your teeth. It's corrective surgery," she declares. "Whatever they say, it doesn't bother me. Especially something like that."

Hugh Hefner's Two New Girlfriends

Hugh Hefner's Two New Girlfriends

Hugh Hefner has certainly bounced back from his breakup with Crystal Harris!

A little over a week after his wedding plans to Crystal Harris came to a screeching halt, the Playboy mogul is tweeting about cozying up to not one, but two new sexy blondes.

As previously reported, Hefner has been spending a lot of time with Harris' best friend, Anna Sophia Berglund (right). And now he's adding another lady to the mix. Hef revealed that his latest love (who he calls "darling") is 27-year-old Canada native Shera Bechard (left).

"Shera is both our November 2011 Playmate & my new girlfriend," he twittered Monday. He added later, "A new GF is the only logical response to heartbreak."

Just last week, the jilted groom informed the Twitterverse that he had already replaced Harris, who called off their wedding five days before they were set to walk down the aisle.

"With Crystal gone, Anna is my best girl," Hefner, 85, twittered Friday. "Anna is really one in a million."

Well, maybe one of two in a million, now that Bechard is in the mix.

Charlie Sheen to Be Killed Off Two and a Half Men?

RIP, Charlie Harper?

Following reports that suggested Two and a Half Men would write out Charlie Sheen's character by simply keeping him in Paris, where he jetted off to the last time we saw him on screen, sources now say Chuck Lorre wants to ensure Sheen can never return to the CBS sitcom...

... by killing Sheen's Harper off.

Portraying Charlie

Will Charlie Sheen be eternally LOSING on Two and a Half Men?

CBS insiders tell TMZ Alan and Jake will learn about Charlie's fate early in the September premiere, and then Ashton Kutcher will arrive when his character buys Charlie's house.

However, no scripts have actually been turned in yet, so any development is possible. What do you think about the sitcom murdering Charlie Harper? Too harsh? Or the proper outcome for a star who burned this bridge in such a flagrant manner?

Ke$ha Is Channeling 'Sexiness' Of '70s Rock For New Album

Glitter-heavy pop star tells MTV News she's going for 'balls-out, irreverent rock and roll.'
By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias

Ke$ha
Photo: MTV News

Ke$ha's already got the face paint down pat, and, during recent live sets, she's even taken to guzzling blood out of a human heart, so it should come as no surprise that, on her upcoming album, the pop star is taking things back to the most theatrical era of rock: the prop-heavy, arena-spanning heyday of the 1970s.

Ke$h revealed her plans over the weekend in Los Angeles, on the red carpet of KIIS FM's annual Wango Tango concert, where she told MTV News that the follow-up to her breakout Animal album (and, we suppose, Cannibal too) would be heavy on hard riffs and light on pretty much everything else.

"The next album ... I've been working on writing on the road, but as far as a sound, I just know it's gonna be balls-out, irreverent rock and roll," she said. "I've been pretty much in this '70s rock and roll kick and I just want to capture some of the true essence of what rock and roll is, and that's just irreverence and sexiness and fun and not giving a f---, so we'll definitely put a bit of rock and roll in it."

So, does that mean that fans can expect the likes of Alice Cooper or Peter Frampton to show up on her new album? Perhaps. Because while Ke$ha's new album is still a ways off, she's already begun calling in favors, hoping to line up a killer collabo for the new disc.

"I'm trying, trust me," she laughed. "I really would love to connect with one of my idols, I mean, that's my dream. I'm working on it."

What do you think of Ke$ha going rock for her next album? Tell us in the comments!

Chris Brown BET Award Snafu Was 'Human Error'

BET exec Stephen Hill takes full responsibility for Drake and Rihanna mistakenly being announced as Viewers' Choice.
By Rob Markman

Chris Brown poses backstage at the BET Awards on Sunday
Photo: Jason Merritt/ Getty Images

Sunday night's 2011 BET Awards Show was filled with amazing live performances, heartfelt acceptance speeches and that one strange moment when a trophy was mistakenly handed out to the wrong artist.

When "106 & Park" hosts Terrance and Rocsi brought contest winner Tiffany Green onstage to announce the Viewers' Choice Award, Green, like all the other presenters of the night, read the winner from a tablet PC, instead of doing the traditional envelope-opening. At first, she called out Chris Brown as the victor, but then she backtracked and gave the trophy to Drake for his collaboration with Rihanna, "What's My Name?"

"Well, this awkward," said Drake to start his acceptance speech, after his and Rihanna's name appeared on the video screen. But then it turned out that the intended recipient was Chris Brown after all, and as the show neared its end, BET cleared up the confusion and brought Breezy out to accept the award.

An embarrassed Green took to Twitter and said, "Bawling backstage. They totally f---ed me up."

In a classy move, BET President of Music Programming and Specials Stephen Hill took full responsibility for the snafu. "That BET Awards Viewer's Choice mix-up was due to human error," he said in a tweet. "And I was the human that made that error. I apologize to ALL affected."

It was just a single blemish on an otherwise event-filled show, which featured performances from Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, Mary J. Bilge, Alicia Keys and Beyoncé, who performed remotely from the Glastonbury festival in England.

Britney Spears' 'I Wanna Go': A Pop-Culture Cheat Sheet

From 'Crossroads' to seashells, here's a look at the references in Britney's latest video.
By James Montgomery

Britney Spears in her music video for "I Wanna Go"
Photo: Jive

Britney Spears' new "I Wanna Go" video is, like some of her past clips, an all-out affront to the pesky paparazzi that follow her every move. But, unlike any video she's done previously, this one tackles the issue with tongue firmly planted in cheek.

See, "Go" is essentially one long dream sequence — instigated by the rote questions Spears is forced to endure by members of the media — and, as such, it's packed with pop-culture nods to film and television (and whistling dogs too). And that fact not only makes it pretty funny, but it sets it apart from most of Brit's other work. And though we've done pop-culture cheat sheets for her other videos, rarely have they been as much fun as they were this time out.

So, without further ado, alphabetized and cross-referenced for your perusing pleasure, here's our "I Wanna Go" cheat sheet:

"Crossroads": Epically bad 2002 coming-of-age flick starring Spears herself (written, interestingly enough, by "Grey's Anatomy" mastermind Shonda Rhimes). In a rare self-effacing moment, the supposed sequel — "Crossroads 2: Cross Harder" — is teased on a theater marquee in "I Wanna Go."

E*Trade Baby: Lippy, fiscally savvy infant who stars in an ongoing series of commercials for the financial company. In "I Wanna Go," there's a baby too, and while he doesn't dispense any trading tips, he does whistle, using the same creepy, CGIed mouth effects the E*Trade ads do.

"Half Baked": Cult 1998 stoner comedy starring Dave Chappelle as a weed-obsessed "master of the custodial arts" (and a weed-addled rapper named Sir Smoke-a-lot), who runs with an appropriately stony crew. Said crew includes actor Guillermo Diaz, who quits his crappy fast-food job in truly epic fashion. The scene is replayed verbatim at the beginning of "I Wanna Go," only with Britney delivering the "F--- you, f--- you, f--- you, you're cool and f--- you ... I'm out!" line. As an added bonus, Diaz also co-stars in the video. Truly the most inexplicably awesome part of the entire production.

"Kill Bill": Ultra-gory 2003 revenge flick written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, it stars Uma Thurman as Beatrix Kiddo, a bride out to avenge her wedding-day massacre. She battles several baddies throughout, including Gogo Yubari, a sadistic 17-year-old who wields a meteor hammer. In "I Wanna Go," Britney uses a microphone in much the same fashion — namely, to bash those pesky paparazzi.

"The Mickey Mouse Club": Oft-revived Disney variety show/ teen-sploitation factory that famously featured young stars like Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera, Ryan Gosling (!) and, of course, Britney. She pays homage to her Mouseketeer days in "I Wanna Go" by wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with a Mickey Mouse skull.

Seashells: Hard, protective exoskeletons created by sea-dwelling creatures. In "I Wanna Go," Diaz's character gives Britney a handful of them, and since the majority of the clip takes place in her daydream, we're going to get deep here: In dreams, seashells represent security or protection.

"Terminator 2: Judgment Day": The 1991 sci-fi blockbuster featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger as the titular Terminator, sent back in time to protect a young John Connor from the nefarious T-1000. Arnie suffers severe battle damage throughout, including one scene where half his face is blasted off, revealing a glowing cyborg eye beneath his skin. That same scene is shown in "I Wanna Go," though it's the paparazzi who are revealed to be robotic killing machines.

"Thriller": Iconic 1984 Michael Jackson mini-movie that may very well be the greatest music video ever made. It concludes with a famous freeze frame (and subsequent zoom-in) of MJ with glowing eyes and Vincent Price's legendary cackle. Britney pays tribute to the scene at the ending of "I Wanna Go," though it's Diaz's eyes that are glowing. We're not sure who provides the cackle.

Did we miss anything? Share the pop-culture tidbits you picked up in the comments below!

Michael Jackson's 'Thriller': Story Behind The 'Glee' Cover

MJ classic is mashed up with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' 'Heads Will Roll' for post-Super Bowl episode.
By Aly Semigran

"Glee"
Photo: FOX

Madonna, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and now, finally, Michael Jackson. The cast of "Glee" has covered plenty of icons during their first two seasons, but it's taken 33 episodes to get around to the King of Pop.

With a huge catalog of Jackson songs, the singing, dancing students of McKinley High paid homage to the late singer with one of his biggest staples (and, arguably, the greatest music video of all time) with their take on "Thriller."

The groundbreaking single from Jackson's best-selling album of the same name was mashed up with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Heads Will Roll" for the post-Super Bowl episode (titled "The Sue Sylvester Bowl Shuffle"), featuring a zombie-fied "Glee" cast.

Bound to become a smash all over again (though with its nonstop rotation at Halloween parties and wedding receptions until the end of time, it's never truly gone away), here's a brief history of the dance/pop classic.

Released on January 23, 1984, "Thriller" was the seventh, and final, single to be released from Jackson's smash record. According to the RIAA, the album (released by Epic Records) has gone gold 29 times, narrowly edging out the Eagles' Greatest Hits 1971-1975 for the title of best-selling album of all time.

In 2009, MTV News estimated that the Thriller album was poised to go triple diamond, meaning 30 million records sold in the U.S. alone.

After Thriller's other singles (including "Billie Jean," "Beat It" and "Wanna Be Startin' Something") dominated the charts, it was time for the spooky, undeniably original track to take over. The song "Thriller" also appeared on many of Jackson's other albums, including the compilations HIStory and Number Ones.

Clocking in at a little under six minutes (though the radio edit was closer to four-and-a-half), the song features pop-music mainstays like synthesizers but shakes things up with its spooky sound effects, including creaking floors, howling and thunder.

The song was produced by Quincy Jones and written and composed by Rod Tempterton and spent 14 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #4.

But it's the music video for "Thriller" that truly made it the phenomenon it was in the '80s and continues to be today. Less a music video than a mini-motion picture, the video (over 13 minutes long and directed by John Landis) won three MTV Video Music Awards and has been named the best music video of all time by many outlets, including VH1 for the special "VH1: 100 Greatest Videos."

The chiller features Jackson in that iconic red leather jacket on a date with his girlfriend (played by Ola Ray) before things go terribly awry. After all, as Jackson (whose disclaimer at the start of the video reads, "This film in no way endorses a belief in the occult") sings in the opening line, "It's close to midnight and something evil's lurking in the dark." Cue werewolves, zombies, Vincent Price's soliloquy and one of the most memorable dance sequences ever.

The video was (no pun intended) a monster hit. As the Los Angeles Times notes, "At the height of the song's popularity, MTV would run the 14-minute 'Thriller' video twice an hour."

Choreographed by Jackson and Michael Peters (who, as the LA Times also reported, appears in the video as one of the zombies) and with makeup by Oscar-winner Rick Baker (also an undead "Thriller" extra) was made with a huge budget of an estimated $500,000.

Still, the efforts paid off. Landis (who told the "Today" show back in 2009 that no one wanted to give them the funds to make the risky vid) made the accompanying 45-minute documentary about the venture, called "The Making of Thriller." Featuring the behind-the-scenes wizardry, as well as the music video in full, it would go on to move more than 10 million copies.

Since then, the signature song and video have seen their share fair of tributes in movies (notably in the 2004 comedy"13 Going on 30") and TV ("South Park," "Family Guy," "30 Rock," among others), not to mention the countless flash mobs that have gone viral. (Remember the prisoners in the Philippines who became overnight phenomenons on YouTube?)

Even with the "Glee" number, this likely won't be the last incarnation of "Thriller." Billboard reported in October that a "Thriller" film is in the works. With a plot allegedly revolving around Price's narration, Kenny Ortega, who directed Jackson's last effort, "This Is It," will reportedly helm the project.

Since Jackson's untimely passing on June 25, 2009, the song and video's legacy continue to live on. In the week following Jackson's death, "Thriller" was the best-selling track in the U.S., with sales of 167,000 copies on the Billboard Hot Digital Singles chart.

Then, in December 2009, "Thriller" was the first music video to ever be inducted into the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress. It seems "no mere mortal can resist ... the thriller" after all.

What did you think of the "Thriller" mash-up on "Glee"? Let us know in the comments!

Michael Jackson Doctor Conrad Murray's Trial To Be Televised

Judge rules that camera will be allowed in the courtroom for manslaughter case.

For what promises to be one of the most bizarre and riveting legal proceedings in years, a Los Angeles judge ruled on Monday that a television camera will be allowed in the courtroom when Michael Jackson's doctor goes on trial for involuntary manslaughter.

Reuters reported that Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael Pastor, approved the presence of a camera in the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray as long as it does not interfere with the proceedings in the closely watched case.

The judge asked for the "absolute least-intrusive placement" of a TV camera in the courtroom, but blocked cameras from documenting jury selection.

Pastor also announced that he would bump up the opening date of the trail by four days to March 24, at which point jury selection will begin. Murray, who faces up to four years in prison if convicted, has pleaded not guilty to the charges, and the trial is expected to last around six weeks.

Cardiologist Murray was hired to be Jackson's personal physician in the run-up to the King of Pop's planned 50-date comeback series of shows at London's O2 arena in the summer of 2009. The doctor told police that he provided Jackson, 50, with sedatives and the surgical anesthetic propofol in order to combat the singer's chronic insomnia. He said he did so on the morning of June 25, 2009, when Jackson died of what a coroner deemed acute propofol poisoning.

TMZ reported on Tuesday (February 8) that Murray's lawyers plan to argue that Jackson was already in weak health before he died and that it's unfair to blame propofol for his passing. Unnamed sources close to the case told the gossip site that at the time of his death, Jackson's body was already failing him in part because concert promoter AEG Live had "driven [him] over the edge" with a rigorous rehearsal schedule for the shows.

Murray's lawyers reportedly plan to call witnesses to say that Jackson was not showing up for rehearsals and when he did he showed "clear signs" of frail health. They also reportedly plan to argue that it was Jackson who administered the final, fatal dose of propofol to himself while Murray was out of the room.

Britney Spears, Afrojack Remixes Put Moguai On The Dance Floor

'Lyve From Beta' DJ crafting another 'Beatport Essentials' sample pack.
By Adam Stewart

Sofi and Moguai

Moguai is quickly becoming one of the hottest names in dance music. Midway through his most-recent Stateside jaunt, "Lyve From America," the German DJ and producer will hit Sin City this weekend for a set at the Palms' Rain Nightclub on Saturday, followed by the granddaddy of them all: opening the Circuit Grounds stage on the final evening of the Electric Daisy Carnival on Sunday.

But it wasn't always club tunes and chart-topping success for the Mau5trap signee, born André Tegeler, who not long ago was on a path that was more likely to put him in the courtroom than the DJ booth.

"I was in Germany, studying for my law examination," he recalled recently in Miami. "But at that same time, I hit my first official German chart, so I had to make a choice: Do I do this the serious or un-serious way? So I said, 'OK, go for the music!' "

Luckily for the EDM aficionados, he put his legal dreams aside and dove headfirst into sound production. And now, just a few years later, he's become an integral part of one of the world's hottest dance labels. Having joined forces with Sofi (as in Deadmau5's "Sofi Needs a Ladder") on "Beat of the Drum," who he first met literally minutes before our chat, Moguai hit big this year in Miami, and his infectious grooves have been spreading like wildfire ever since. With his latest solo release "Oxygen," a rework of Afrojack's club monster "Bangduck" due out July 4, and a massive remix of the new Britney Spears single "I Wanna Go" to be released shortly after, Moguai is quickly proving that he is as versatile as he is talented.

Coming off the success of "Lyve From Beta," a unique release that included all of the loops, samples and tools from his set at the renowned Denver nightclub, Moguai is busy crafting another sample-based Ableton-friendly release pack, "Beatport Elements."

"It will have parts, so you can download the full audio and you can download the separate parts of what the tracks are made of," he explained. "You can see the pitch and the bpm, and you have lots of information about the music, so you can deal with it and handle it in whichever way you like."

While in the past, bedroom producers were tasked with slicing and dicing a master track from their favorite artists, the tech-savvy can now get their hands on individual song parts and re-interpret the tracks in their own style, something Beatport is hoping to do with more artists, Moguai said. He recalled how different his upbringing to the scene was compared with the technological advantages of today. With a bourgeoning tour schedule on the horizon, he's relieved that the age of the digital DJ allows him to travel light.

"It's nice, all of this software and all of these things, but I'm from this old-school generation. I'm coming from this vinyl business. I played so many years with only vinyl, and I paid so much traveling with vinyl to all of my gigs!" he recalled, laughing.

Will you be catching Moguai on tour? Tell us in the comments below!

Linkin Park Talk Next Album From Moscow's Red Square

LP's performance of 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon' single 'Iridescent' in historic landmark airs Friday at 8:55 p.m. on all MTV channels.

Linkin Park's voluminous A Thousand Suns was a departure, to say the very least. And, from the sound of things, they're getting ready to depart once again with a brand-new album that's already in its infancy.

At least that's what Linkin Park told MTV News in Moscow, where they'll perform the Suns song — and lead single from the "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" soundtrack — "Iridescent" on Friday from the iconic Red Square, in conjunction with the film's world premiere (a performance that will air on MTV, MTV2, mtvU, VH1 Classic and Palladia at 8:55 p.m. ET/PT). Turns out they've been working on new material for months now, and things are finally beginning to take shape.

"We're always writing. It's hard to explain to people in simple terms what it means to us; the way we do it is a little weird and unique," LP's Mike Shinoda said. "We kind of write it and record it at the same time; we can do it on the road at all times. I mean, I was in my hotel room throwing something together at, like, 2 a.m. But what it takes to go from one of those demos to a finished song, I mean, we really obsess over it. It takes a while."

And to that end, Linkin Park said there's still no firm release date for the new album (which will once again be produced by Rick Rubin), but they do know that it will see the light of day sooner rather than later, which, for them, would be yet another departure.

"We do have a really great head start. We've got some great music, some good ideas. The creativity has continued to flow for us for the last few years, consistently," Chester Bennington said. "So, we do plan on having this record out much quicker than what we've turned out in the past — that was one of our goals — and I feel like we're in a really good place now."

Of course, the next logical question would be: What does the new album sound like? And while LP weren't about to give up all the details ("Right now, it sounds like blips and bleeps and pieces," Bennington laughed), they're adamant that it will most certainly sound different than any of their previous efforts ... mostly because that's been the goal with every record they make.

"The fans, what they always ask is, 'What's it going to sound like?' " Shinoda said. "And, for us, when we go into a record, from the beginning until now, the attitude has been 'We're going to challenge ourselves, and try to be better songwriters, try and come up with something that's original.' And we can't say, 'Oh, it's going to sound like one of our other records,' because the goal is actually not to do that."

Linkin Park's Red Square performance will premiere Friday, June 24, at 8:55 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, MTV2, mtvU, VH1 Classic and Palladia.

Chuckie Will Debut Michael Jackson Remix In Miami

Official 'Hollywood Tonight' remix coming to Miami Music Week.
By Akshay Bhansali

Leaving the South by Southwest festival, Lavo New York and Las Vegas' Marquee in his wake, house DJ Chuckie has his sights set on the week ahead. With Miami Music Week now upon us, Chuckie plans to seize the opportunity to debut new material. Fans will be tickled to know the Dutch producer has tracks in the can with Kelly Rowland and T-Pain, but when MTV News caught up with him Friday in New York, Chuckie shared the achievement of which he's most proud.

"I did a Michael Jackson remix, which was really scary — to touch Michael Jackson vocals," Chuckie said. "I did this remix for this track 'Hollywood Tonight.' I couldn't say it for a minute: The label called me, and they said, 'You can't say nothing about this. It's kind of a secret project.' It's gonna come out anytime now."

"Hollywood Tonight" was originally produced by Teddy Riley for Jackson's posthumous Michael album, and Chuckie's mix of the song will be the sole official remix of the track.

"I will play it Miami," Chuckie revealed. "I told them this is the best week to launch the remix. So it feels really good. I'm the only one remixing that Michael Jackson track, and they are considering it a single. For me, especially, it's an honor to remix the King of Pop because he died on my birthday."

So, will the mix be a thundering Chuckie Dutch house banger or will it have a melodic progressive house feel, like his Marquee remix of Diddy-Dirty Money's "I Hate That You Love Me"? Well, according to the "Let the Bass Kick" producer, fans will be getting a healthy dose of both.

"I had to bring in the raucous," Chuckie confessed. "Yeah, I did the Chuckie flavor, but then again, I wanted to make it really musical, so I went progressive (house) on it."

Chuckie will be performing twice at Miami Music Week: at the Cr2 Records Party at Wall Lounge on Wednesday, and then headlining "No Sugar Added" at Nikki Beach on Friday.

Are you excited to hear Chuckie's remix of Michael Jackson's "Hollywood Tonight"? Let us know in the comments below!

Shia LaBeouf Likens 'Transformers 2' To 'Apocalypse Now' Chaos

'Dark of the Moon,' however, was the first 'Transformers' film to have 'a fully sussed-out script,' star tells MTV News.
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Give Michael Bay and Shia LaBeouf credit for stepping up and admitting their cinematic gaffes. Both guys have owned up to the fact that 2009's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," despite nabbing more than $830 million at the worldwide box office, did not measure up to their popcorn aspirations.

"The second one, we had a tough go," Bay told us in February about shooting the film in the wake of the writers' strike. "It was a very, very tough thing to make a movie under those circumstances. It affected a lot of Hollywood at that time."

The key issue was the film was rushed into production without all the creative pieces fully in place; filmmakers had a huge budget but not exactly the clearest idea of the story they were trying to tell. In this sense, LaBeouf told MTV News recently in Moscow, the movie became Bay's "Apocalypse Now," the notoriously troubled, Francis Ford Coppola-directed Vietnam War film.

"[On] the second movie where we had our hiccups, there were good things, but there were more bad things," LaBeouf explained, going on to reference the documentary about the "Apocalypse" production. "Before I came out here, I watched 'Hearts of Darkness.' And in it, you have Francis Ford Coppola saying to camera, 'I have too much money, I have no script, and I'm going to shoot myself in the head.' "

LaBeouf went on to make clear he wasn't comparing his summer tentpole to that classic war film, only "the conundrum," as he put it, of undertaking a sprawling project under less-than-organized circumstances. "[It was] very similar in terms of Coppola and Mike on set," he continued. "And the insanity of the second movie."

Production on "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," the third film in the franchise, which hits theaters Wednesday, couldn't have been more different than the second. "This was the first time we've had a fully sussed-out script, with a strong through line and the best plot and arc [LaBeouf's character] Sam has ever had," the actor said. "And it's also simple in the places you want it to be and not complicated. I think the second movie you got convoluted, complicated action where you can't enjoy it. You don't know whose elbow is what, or whose face is getting impaled. You don't know who the enemy is, you don't know who the hero is. You get lost. [Bay] simplified all his action, so that you can thoroughly enjoy it and his simplification of the movie, we benefited greatly from it."

The result, as LaBeouf told us at the MTV Movie Awards, is what he views as the finest installment in the franchise. But that doesn't mean he'll be returning for a fourth go-round. Reiterating a sentiment he conveyed to us at the MTV Movie Awards earlier this month, "Dark of the Moon" will be his final "Transformers" movie.

"I've learned a great deal from Michael, as a person, as an actor. As a person on his sets, you learn a lot," he said. "And it's not that I don't enjoy working with Michael. I love working with Michael. I would do any movie Michael wants to do. I just don't think there's anywhere to take it Sam."

Check out everything we've got on "Transformers: Dark of the Moon."

Black Eyed Peas, Usher, Slash Light Up Super Bowl XLV Halftime Show

Foursome is joined by special guests and tons of lights for smash-hit medley.

The Black Eyed Peas promised a party at the Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday (February 6), and the pop supernovas definitely delivered, with a performance teeming with lights, dancers and surprise appearances from celebrity pals.

Following a Chatter.com commercial that showed animated versions of the Peas showing off their social-media skills, the group kicked things off with their 2009 smash "I Gotta Feeling," descending from the ceiling on illuminated platforms onto a stage surrounded by a cluster of dancers clad in white bodysuits. The foursome led the team of fist-pumping troops in "Tron"-like getups, with Taboo sporting an outfit covered in flashing lights, will.i.am rocking a shiny hairpiece, Apl.de.ap wearing huge bright studs and Fergie vamping it up in bling-laden shoulder pads.

When the speaker-busting bass of "Boom Boom Pow" dropped, the dancers dispersed across the field to create arrow-shaped formations as the glow-in-the-dark lights on their suits illuminated the stadium. Then rumored surprise guest Slash of Guns N' Roses rose from below the stage for a "Sweet Child O' Mine" duet with Fergie. The GNR great rocked a finger-searing solo in a studded version of his signature black top hat as more angular platforms and dancers moved across the gridiron. The platforms were bearing scores of marching-band musicians who blasted their horns and pounded away on their drums as the Peas went into "Pump It" and blue lights splashed across the production.

Quick streams of fog heralded the arrival of the Peas' second surprise guest, Usher, who swooped in on a long chain to bust out his will.i.am-assisted joint "OMG." Rocking a sparkly collar on an otherwise all-white ensemble, the R&B hitmaker cranked out several counts of energetic choreography, enlivening moves from his "OMG" video and at one point jumping over Will and landing in a split.

A spray of pyro ushered in the collective's breakout 2003 hit "Where Is the Love?" as the oddly shaped platforms spelled out the word "Love" in bright-red letters. The team of dancers, which appeared to have multiplied to over 100, formed hearts across the field as will updated the lyrics of the smash with lines like, "Obama, let's get these educated."

Then the group jumped ahead to their most recent single, 2010's "The Time (Dirty Bit)," as several back up hoofers rocking cubed helmets joined the Peas onstage and dancers lined up along the gridiron to simultaneously bust out the Running Man, a move which drew cheers from the crowd.

The platinum-selling Peas wrapped up the performance with a reprise of "I Gotta Feeling," as the quartet triumphantly signed off amid of blitz of fog, firepower and flashing lights.

Ripping the halftime show was clearly a touching moment for will, who tweeted beforehand, "Me and apl started the peas when we were 16 yesterday we were dreamin now were livin it. Wow. I'm not crying out of sadness or nervousness its joy and pride and memories and the journey."

And once the crew left the stage, the frontman was not only proud, but pumped. "That was so freakin sick," he wrote. "Wow...!!!"

Justin Bieber Tackled by Undercover Cop at Macy's

Justin Bieber Tackled by Undercover Cop at Macy's

What kind of monster would attack Justin Bieber? It's like attacking a baby bunny or a cute little kitten! As it turns out, a plainclothes police officer concerned for the singer's safety would.

On Thursday, ABC News reported that Bieber had been jumped by an unidentified male while greeting fans outside the iconic Herald Square Macy's in New York City. But police now tell TMZ that the man who climbed over a metal barrier and tackled Biebs was an undercover cop who thought the singer was in danger of being trampled by the frantic crowd.

Here's what went down: At Macy's to promote the launch of his new fragrance, Someday, Bieber was outside greeting the crowd of around 100 fans (most of whom hadn't gotten tickets to the in-store event), when a man jumped the barrier and knocked him to the ground. One of Bieber's security guards quickly intervened, pulling the man off the singer.

According to the police, the man immediately identified himself as an undercover officer, but one of Justin's security guards wasn't convinced. The guard wouldn't back down, and so police took him into custody and cited him for disorderly conduct.

Things have been straightened out now, though, and Bieber doesn't seem to be sweating the incident much. As his rep told People, "This was a momentary, well-intentioned misunderstanding that was quickly resolved, and the event went very well."
